Description

Windmill socks from Heroes on Socks - size 41-46

Socks are an essential part of your outfit. Super suitable for your own accent. Like these socks with characteristic windmills. A contemporary design, made from 80% combed cotton, 17% polyamide and 3% elastane in carefully selected small-scale family workshops from Italy.

The windmill principle

Windmills are mills that convert the kinetic energy of the wind into rotational energy of the blades, which you can then use for generating electricity (wind turbine), pressing oil from oilseeds (oil mill), grinding grain (grain mill), sawing wood (saw mill) or moving water (polder mill).

Where do the windmills come from?

Windmills have their origins in China and Persia (Iran), where windmills had been used for centuries before they appeared in Europe - northwest France, Flanders and southern England - in the 12th century. The oldest mention of a windmill in the Netherlands comes from the former village of Willemskerke in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and dates from 1221.

Windmills in the Netherlands

There are still more than 1,100 windmills in the Netherlands (not modern wind turbines), 90% of which are national monuments.  The first mention of the tower mill with a rotating roof occurs in 1280. There are four of these left in the Netherlands, the oldest in Zeddam. In the 15th century, the wipmolen appeared in the Netherlands as a polder mill. The wooden octagon originated in the Netherlands at the beginning of the 16th century. The tjasker also dates from this century. The sawmill was developed from 1592 onwards through the use of the crankshaft.

The highlight of the windmills

In the Golden Age, the Zaan region was a gigantic industrial mill area. Hundreds of windmills sawed the wood from Scandinavia for shipbuilding, and for the paper industry that had flourished since 1650 - the paper mills continued to operate until 1795. The mills dried up the polders, they pumped up clean water for production purposes from great depths, they ground the grain from the Baltic Sea countries. They ground sunflower seeds and beat the linseed into oil for the then gigantic paint industry.
