The Milkmaid

The Milkmaid is a painting by the Dutch master Johannes Vermeer from around 1660. A maid completely immersed in her work deeply pours milk. Apart from the white milk jet, nothing seems to be moving. Vermeer combined this everyday activity into an impressive painting - the figure stands free in the light space like an image. Vermeer had an eye for how the light plays over the objects in hundreds of colorful dots. The name The milkmaid is factually incorrect because a milkmaid delivered milk to the house; the woman pictured here is a kitchen maid. She is recognizable as such because of her simple clothing and ironed head cap. The Nestlé company uses The Milkmaid as a logo on La Laitière's dairy products.
