Piet Design makes historically responsible, buildable products that link to Dutch cultural history. With an underlying goal, as Piet (Elisabeth Rijkels-Visser) says: historical awareness cannot be imposed, but it can grow slowly. I hope that people enjoy my designs and that they contribute to understanding our civilization.

The origin of the game of chess
The forerunner of the game of chess as we know it today originated in India at the beginning of the 7th century. Within a few centuries, the game spread to Europe via Persia and eventually conquered the whole world. The first chess pieces were based on the parts of an Indian army: foot soldiers, horsemen, elephants and chariots. In the course of time, not only the pieces themselves, but also the rules of the game have been modified. For example, in the original version there were elephants, but no queen. She only appeared in the Middle Ages as a replacement for the king's counselor. Chess pieces were first carved from ivory or bone. Later they were turned from wood and nowadays they are made from all kinds of materials: ceramics, metal, plastic and… paper.

These products have an underlying purpose, as Piet says: historical awareness cannot be imposed, but it can grow slowly. I hope that people enjoy my designs and that they contribute to understanding our civilization. Piet Design was founded in 1990 by Elisabeth (Piet) Rijkels-Visser (1972), who already made houses, farms and bridges in the 1980s. In addition to product development, Piet Design focuses on education and installations that allow the visitor to become part of the artwork itself.
