Rembrandt's Night Watch
The Night Watch is the largest and most famous work by Rembrandt. It was commissioned by the Amsterdam civic guards of the Kloveniersdoelen to hang at their headquarters. Rembrandt was the first painter to show figures in action in such a group portrait – people usually opted for a static pose. But what makes the Night Watch particularly famous is Rembrandt’s use of light in the painting. It’s not for nothing that more than two million visitors a year come to see this masterpiece.
Rijksmuseum and Playmobil
To make art accessible to the widest possible audience, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has joined forces with the German toy company Playmobil. Together with designer Frederik Roijé they have created three Playmobil sets based on the paintings The Night Watch, ‘Marten and Oopjen’ and The Milkmaid as an introduction to art for a young audience.
