This brooch is an ode to the Sunflowers by Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890). He painted the 5 Sunflower paintings in Arles (Southern France) in 1889. For this brooch, Michael Barnaart reduced the organic lines of the sunflowers to the essentials, without losing Van Gogh's capricious handwriting. Simplifying shapes creates a powerful and iconic image. The geometric compositions fit into the design tradition of Dutch design. Sunflowers by Vincent van Gogh

According to Van Gogh, the sunflowers represent gratitude. Vincent van Gogh painted a total of five canvases with sunflowers, which are now among his most important work. Vincent van Gogh wanted to show with his Sunflowers that it is possible to make a powerful painting in different variants of one color (yellow) and nothing else. With this in mind, Michael Barnaart designed this brooch in one shade of matte gold. The reflection of the light on the relief creates different color nuances.
