Miniature Het Loo Palace

Stadtholder William III, great-grandson of William of Orange, bought the medieval castle Het Oude Loo in 1684 to build a new hunting lodge next to it with a square main building in classicist style, with side wings on either side, connected by semicircular colonnades. After he also became King of England, he expanded the palace from 1691 to 1694 with four connecting the main building with the side wings. The colonnades were moved to the newly landscaped garden. The palace was the summer residence of the Dutch stadholders and kings from 1686 to 1975. It was last inhabited by Princess Margriet. Het Loo Palace now serves as a museum.
