Nefertiti Vase by Roderick Vos

The special Nefertiti vase by Roderick Vos is a beautiful design that is reminiscent of the crown that Queen Nefertiti of Egypt wears on the famous bust in the Neues Museum in Berlin. The vase is not only beautiful but with 3 different vase compartments, it is also difficult to produce. That happens at Cor Unum with slipcasting, a special moulding technology. The Nefertiti vase was shown for the first time at the Salone del Mobile in Milan in 2015. An ode by Roderick Vos to Zweitse Landsheer - ceramic designer and founder of Cor Unum, and of an almost forgotten branch of the ‘national’ industry, Dutch ceramics. The Nefertiti is 34 cm high, and available in white and these “ugly glazes” a mix of different glazes that each vase a unique decoration.

With the Nefretiti vase, Roderick Vos emphasizes the importance of mastering designing and making good moulds. A good mould makes it possible to create complex shapes such as this Nefertiti vase. This vase is completely handmade and the production asks considerable ceramic craftsmanship.

Roderick Vos (Groningen, 1965) studied Industrial Design at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. He left for Japan in 1987 where his interest in Asian culture and products increased. This fascination for Asia is – even today - reflected in his designs. After his studies, he started together with his partner Studio Roderick Vos in 's-Hertogenbosch. Roderick Vos has a clear concept of design: "in my opinion designs need to incorporate some form of modesty. When designers try too hard to 'design', the message does not come across. Simplicity is the key to success, give a product itself the space to tell the story. The idea of evolution I find fascinating and I try to have this interwoven in my designs: has a product the right to live? The fusion of old crafts with innovative industrial techniques is a key characteristic of my designs."

The Nefertiti vase is both a Dutch design and Dutch made product. Pottery workshop Cor Unum in 's-Hertogenbosch produces the Nefertiti vase. Cor Unum (since 1953) develops and produces new ceramic designs, based on innovation, collaboration and sustainability in cooperation with Dutch design talent.
