Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum: the most iconic museum in the Netherlands.

The renovated museum reopened its doors to the public in 2013 in the renovated Cuypers Cathedral on the Museumplein in Amsterdam. A beautiful building with a surprising interior and beautiful exhibitions. As a national institution, the Rijksmuseum offers a representative overview of Dutch art and history from the Middle Ages together with a good overview of European and Asian art. The Rijksmuseum preserves and presents art objects and objects of historical significance and makes them accessible to a wide audience. The museum has a history that goes back to more than 200 years and has moved its location several times. The Rijksmuseum first opened its doors in 1800 when it was called the National Art Gallery. It was established in Huis ten Bosch in The Hague. The collection consisted mainly of paintings and historical objects. In 1808 the museum was moved to the new capital Amsterdam, where it was housed in the Royal Palace. In 1885 the museum was moved to the Cuypers Cathedral and the museum's official opening was at its current location.
