Delft Blue: typical Dutch?
The origins of the world-famous Delft pottery date back to the early 1600s. In the 17th century, the VOC (Dutch East India Company) ships brought back Chinese porcelain decorated in blue on white. This porcelain soon became very popular amongst the upper class at the time, including the European royal houses. When import ceased due to the civil war in China, the Dutch potters immediately seized their chance and started producing imitations of the blue on white decorated porcelain. This was the start of the Dutch production of Delft blue, which is now famous as Dutch produce worldwide.

Royal Delft / ‘De Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles’, founded in 1653, is the only remaining Delft ceramic factory dating from the 17th century. In this factory on the Rotterdamseweg in Delft, the world-famous Delft pottery is still hand painted according to century-old traditions.
