Canal houses of Amsterdam
Many of the Amsterdam canal houses were built in the 17th century, the period of great prosperity in the city. These mansions or merchant houses served as a residence but also as a workshop. Canal houses are often characterized by the facade and the entrance: the door above the stairs was for distinguished visitors, the door under the stairs for staff and merchants. Because space was at a premium, the houses are often narrow and high, with a hoisting beam just under the roof to haul furniture and goods in through the window. You will find this kind of canal houses in several cities in the Netherlands, especially in Delft, Gouda, Leiden, and Haarlem. The Amsterdam canal belt was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010.
