World Heritage: The Wadden

The Wadden; completely unique to the Netherlands. Nowhere else in the world will you find a wildlife area like this. Gorgeous landscape along the Dutch coast, stretching from Den Helder to the Danish town of Esbjerg. You won’t find a coastline like this anywhere else. It comes as no surprise that UNESCO included the area on its list of World Heritages in 2009.

Nature at work

The Wadden area originated some thousand years ago. As a result of an accelerated rise in sea levels, the marshy bog between the dunes and the mainland was washed away by seawater. The seawater created a shallow inland sea; the current Wadden Sea. The new landscape along this Wadden Sea is characterized by an extremely balanced ecological system, which is continuously developing. The tides, winds, and the presence of a shallow (North) sea full of sand play a crucial role in this. In the Wadden, you can see nature’s work up close.
